Renaming

Hit F2 or Shift+F6. If you have many files you want to rename, it's easier to use Mass Renaming tool or Editorial Renaming.

Tips:

Copying to a new, given name. You can press Ctrl+Enter after entering a new title, then the file\directory will not be renamed, but copied to a given new name in current folder. This is very similar to the "Copy file in the same directory" command, except that you have less options (using the mentioned command you can copy one file\directory to many other names, with this method you can't).

The second addition to renaming files\directories, is what I named Smart Renaming.

Smart Renaming

Usually, when you rename a file and change the extension, nothing happens except, that the extension of the file is changed. Of course, in many cases, this may cause problems, since a file has different extension, than it is really. For example, normally, after changing "image.gif" to "image.jpg", only the extension is changed, while the real format is still "gif", not "jpg". To really change the format of the file, you should use a special program, or, in case of ACB, the Image Quick Viewer.

However, ACB is watching what you are doing with files extensions. And if it is able to handle the conversion from old extension's format, to a  new one, this is automatically offered to you.

This is still renaming. That is, if the conversion is successful, the original file is deleted (unless you'll use Ctrl+Enter to make a copy, this is a trick working always, even with standard renaming).

Ac Browser Plus is currently able to handle the following conversions, when renaming:

  • Image -> Image. For example if you renamed a file from "my image.gif" to "my image.jpg", then ACB will ask you if, along with the renaming, you want to make the conversion from gif to jpg format.
  • Zip archive -> Exe. For example, if you renamed a file from "archive.zip" to "archive.exe", then ACB will ask you if you want to create the SFX program.
  • Any file\directory -> Zip. For example, if you renamed a file from "my document.doc" to "my document.zip", then ACB will ask you if you want to compress the file. The same with directories.

Notes.

As mentioned, this is renaming, so after successful conversion, original file\directory is deleted, unless you'll press Ctrl+Enter after renaming.

When Auto Conversion appears, you are not asked about anything. You'll be unable to set the details of conversion (e.g. the quality of jpg - 85 will be used).

"Smart renaming" doesn't work when browsing FTP folders.
